Basic Foundation For Corporate Social Responsibility

Sustainable development was initiated in a number of countries and came from the desire of many people to find a balance between the business, the shareholders and the stakeholders. Each had differing interests, which could lead to unrest and social instability and impact all parties badly.

Business entities, together with the regulators who as the driving force played a major role in finding this balance, were encouraged to take a leading position in making changes. Sustainable development became the business entities’ framework for thinking and acting, and creates a balance between the profit-based business, the minority shareholders interests, and the relationships with stakeholders.

As a business entity that has a vision “To be one of the leading investment companies in the Asia Pacific region through solid financial management, innovation, and competent human resources”, the Company has a moral obligation to realize this balance. As a healthy business with a bright future, with organizational governance based on compliance and accountability, Human Resources (HR) Competency Development, and the fulfillment of their rights, the Company’s growth linked to the people of Indonesia, will together strengthen the Company’s position to achieve its vision.

The balance as stated in Company’s vision can be achieved through the Company’s commitment to 4 (four) Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) aspects:

  1. Corporate Social Responsibility related to the Environment.
  2. Corporate Social Responsibility related to Employees through Employment, Occupational Health and Safety.

Corporate Social Responsibility Related to Consumer Responsibility

MNC Group views its relationship with customers as more than just business. It is the Company’s goal to build relationships based on trust that will ultimately lead to customer loyalty. To this end, the Company, and its subsidiaries, hold regular activities during which its employees can interact with customers and learn about their expectations from the Company’s products and services

The Company’s initiatives and activities aimed at customers includes:

  1. Providing facilities explaining MNC Group’s products to existing and potential customers either through the Company’s website or the integrated subsidiaries’ websites.
  2. Providing customer service centers in all business units.
  3. Socializing and educating existing and potential customers about capital market products and where they can obtain them in the Company.
  4. Regular meetings with customers to maintain customer loyalty In addition, the Company offers a communication channel for shareholders, where they are seen as consumers of the Company’s image, through BHIT share trading on the Indonesia Stock Exchange.

PT MNC Investama Tbk (“The Company”) or MNC Group has a long track record of running social projects, including a comprehensive disaster response program. The Company’s first corporate social responsibility (CSR) program has been “RCTI Peduli”, which focuses on raising public funds for victims of natural disasters and the underprivileged across Indonesia in cooperation with RCTI TV. The public funds raised are distributed to those in need. Meanwhile, transportation, distribution, and other operational costs are borne by the Company.

As MNC Group grows, the Company would like to do more for the people of Indonesia. With this in mind, the Company continually updates the quality and coverage of its CSR programs to empower the community; improve the quality of public health; and empower micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to enable them to become sustainable.

On September 1, 2015, the Company launched the “MNC SPIRIT (Semangat Pemberdayaan Masyarakat Indonesia Tangguh)” program, as the umbrella for the Company’s CSR activities, with the following vision: Improving the quality of life of Indonesian people.

MNC SPIRIT focuses on fostering community wellbeing through 3 pillars, including: infrastructure development; empowerment of farmers, fishermen and MSMEs; and health. The MNC SPIRIT CSR programs are effective, efficient and sustainable. In addition, the Company has continued its work on long-term CSR projects, including taking care of people in need and victims of natural disasters.

Much earlier, in 2004, MNC Group established the Jalinan Kasih Foundation as the face of the Company’s CSR programs. The foundation has streamlined the Company’s CSR activities so that they are more focused, integrated and on a larger scale. The focus of Jalinan Kasih Foundation is to provide services in the areas of health and education, as well as to those who are underprivileged. In particular, the Company strives to help those who are unable to access education and health facilities.

CSR Activities in 2015

Throughout 2015, the Company conducted CSR activities in the following areas: environment, manpower, occupational health and safety, social development, religion, education and customer protection. In addition to the CSR activities routinely performed by each business unit, the Company ensures that its CSR activities are in synergy with MNC Group’s subsidiaries. This is so project benefits have a greater impact and wider coverage.

Environment

The Company has been promoting environmental awareness, as a part of the Go Green movement. This has been done through a number of activities. Go Green can be interpreted as maintaining environmentally conscious behavior in every aspect of life. In addition, Go Green activities have business value that benefits companies, including: reduction of operating costs as a result of efficient use of energy, resources (fuel) and office supplies (electricity, water, paper, printer ink); optimized space utilization; and more efficient transportation.

The Company shows its concern for the environment through a variety of daily activities. The Company has been running regular environmental campaigns at MNC Group’s offices, including encouraging all employees to make efficient use of electricity, to unplug the power connector when leaving the office, and to reduce water consumption.

One of the innovations of the Company’s employee who became the winner of the MNC Innovation Award 2015 is a water treatment system for air conditioner/AC condensation, which generates clean water that meets the drinking water quality standard. This system has been used in MNC Group’s office buildings, and can reduce the consumption of both tap and ground water.

We realize that the process of paper production requires large quantities of chemicals, water and energy, as well as wood fiber, which is the main raw material used in the production. The paper production process generates a large amount of waste. Hence, the use of paper has short and long-term effects on the environment, which contribute to global warming and environmental damage.

The Company has been making an effort to save paper in the past few years by printing internal memos on the blank sides of non-confidential document. The Company is currently developing digital information technology programs that can be applied across all of MNC Group’s business processes, including internet banking and mobile financial services. Optimizing the use of digital information technology will help to reduce the Company’s use of paper.

Good cooperation between the Company and its employees is an important element that supports business sustainability. Therefore, the Company respects the rights of all its employees in accordance with the applicable employment laws and regulations.

In an effort to create a better work environment, the Company implements the principles of fairness, equality and non-discrimination when it comes to recruitment; and opportunities to participate in training programs and career/promotion development programs regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, race and inter-group. Remuneration is provided according to position levels, responsibilities and performance appraisal results.

MNC Group is concerned about the Occupational Health and Safety (K3) of its employees. The Company strives to create a safe and comfortable work environment to encourage optimum employee productivity. On the other hand, the Company requires that all employees adhere to its occupational health and safety policies and standard operating procedures to minimize accidents. Every employee is required to contribute to creating a clean, safe and comfortable work environment; wear protective clothing and safety gear; and not engage in activities that could endanger other employees.

MNC Investama as a business entity, believes that corporate social responsibility (CSR) should be considered, addressed and fulfilled as an inherent responsibility in daily life  and activities, by the Company as an institution and management and employees as individuals. The Company believes that CSR fulfillment is a business strategy in the context of business sustainability. Similar to other multinational companies, CSR has become an integral part of the Company’s policies. Implementing social responsibility is a form of obligations fulfillment to all stakeholders as a social investment that will provide reciprocal sustainable benefits in the long term.

MNC Investama strives to spread inspiration through its CSR programs. Fulfillment of corporate social responsibility, is not enough if only done by sheer relief. There should be strong commitment to make it sustainable and purposeful activities.

CSR is important for the Company, both as institution and individual employees. In beneficial perspective, CSR program to employees is how to foster a sense of caring and sensitive to social situations experienced by the surrounding environment. Hence, employees will be more thoughtful and vigorously work as a form of gratitude for various available facilities and happiness. Meanwhile, CSR in institutional perspective is beneficial to the Company’s awareness as an integral part of all stakeholders. Therefore, all policies taken by the Company will strive to provide benefits not only to business partners and investors, but also to all people who are not directly linked to the Company’s business activities.

On November 22, 2013, the Company engaged in a CSR activity as a form of social commitment to the society, which in this particular instance is focused on the area of education and especially for elementary School students. In this CSR program, the Company’s employees are encouraged to donate secon hand books in good condition (1 book minimum per employee), and also to renovate an unused room in Mekar Sari elementary School, Pulo Mas, into a school library.

Our efforts to implement this include raising employees’ awareness of various issues relating to the economy, social issues, culture and environment, with due consideration to human rights.

In 2012, the Company’s CSR activities were concentrated on environmental issues, such as the planting of mangrove trees on Pramuka Island and Tidung Island, both in the Thousand Islands, in July 2012. Meanwhile, the media-based subsidiaries also ran their own CSR activities, which covered sport, health, education, religious activities and assistance for natural disaster victims, among others.

The Company realizes that the implementation of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) should not merely be a voluntary activity; rather, it should also be part of joint commitment to build sustainable development and create a conducive investment climate that will support an improvement in the welfare of society. This commitment is also stated in the provisions of Law No. 40 year 2007 regarding Limited Liability Companies that govern the obligation of a company to meet its social and environmental responsibilities.

The Company’s CSR activities are aimed at raising social awareness and increasing participation among the employees of the Company and of the subsidiaries to motivate them to understand and take real action to help tackle social issues.
